'Free Mars' OpFor Tanks

Pictures up top, fluff and musing below.

The kit is Brigade Model's 15mm Scifi European Federation Gamelin 10 wheeled tank. I have added etched brass stowage to the manned turret from the set brigade sell, a bed roll made out of putty, and a fuel can from the bits box, I'm pretty sure it is from GZG. I also added a co-axial tribarrel to the manned turret that also came from a pack that Brigade sell. The remote turrets are from another Euro-Fed kit, the Catroux ten wheeled AFV series, that Brigade were kind enough to sell to me seperately. Brigade have always been very friendly and helpful in all my communications with them and stuff like this, being able to talk to and share ideas with the manufacturers themselves is one of the reasons I like the 15mm SF community so much.

Reference Corner: RUST NEVER SLEEPS Vol.1

Welcome to the reference corner.

This will be a little series I do to collect various reference pictures for myself and others in categories. Inevitably there will be some crossover and I might put the same pictue in more than one post if it fits. There probably won't be a lot of text just juicy reference photos. I'm starting with rust because it is my favourite. I love rust. I don't know why I just think it looks amazing. All pictures are my own.

There will be more rust pictures.

Review: Bushido, The Descension Faction Starter Set

Tl;dr: this is one of the smartest and most complete starter sets I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, GCT did not pay me for this opinion.

I’ve not done a product review before but I was really impressed with this set when I opened it and starting cleaning the components and really felt like I should put one together as I feel like this is exactly how a starter set should be done.

The newly released (though it has been out for a short while now) starter for ‘The Descension’ (formerly ‘Tengu Descension’) for the latest edition of Bushido, the compact game of warband/squad level combat in a fantasy far east, gives us a strong theme from the off. The previous starter offered us a mix of human devotees and a mix of bird types including one of the larger ones mounted on a 40mm base. Here we have one focussing on the smaller, fast birds, clearly intended to showcase The Descension’s signature speed and manoeuvrability. This is made clear especially as every model’s rule card features the ability to boost speed and has a theme card that accentuates this, more on those later.

Look closely and you can see the names!
The sculpts really impressed me for more reasons than simply the quality and sharpness of the sculpts and casting. These are intelligently put together sculpts. For a start they are largely one piece sculpts, one is split at the waist, one requires its weapon and hand be attached to its wrist, and then there are the wings, but that is it. The waist join is big and has the belt moulded so that it can only sit the way it is meant to, the weapon is anchored across a groove in the back, and the wings are not only moulded as a single piece (I expect GCT got sick of the many emails I and others had to send asking for wings after we received two left or two right wings where they are separate on older models. In their favour, replacements were always despatched with alacrity) that can only fit the model they are intended for but also have the names of the characters they belong to cast onto the tab that glues onto the back.

Additionally, GCT casts have uncommonly thin parts, usually on the staff or blade of a weapon. This is excellent aesthetically, Bushido models have some of the best proportions I have seen on metal casts, however they are inevitably brittle. Rather than thicken the parts here they have opted to cleverly reinforce them. The bird standing on one leg, for example, has the staff anchored to the base tab (I like to make my life difficult so have trimmed that off as part of my basing plan) so as to avoid a free floating staff end that may be easily knocked. The separate weapon piece on the flightless bird is as mentioned above intended to be glued across the back giving it more strength, and the right hand dagger of the model that joins at the waist is moulded on to the end of a dramatically sweeping cloak so that it is impossible to break.

The Unbreakable Blade

Every point of potential weakness I have been able to find has been mitigated to at least some degree by the sculptor. I really appreciate the care here. You would have to try very hard to make an error in putting these models together and while breakages will always be possible, care has been taken to reinforce them against the usual level of knocks you can expect a model to take. There was a little flash to clear up but a few swipes with a scalpel and a brush with a file fixed this. These sorts of models for games from smaller companies can sometimes demand more than a beginner’s level of modeling ability but I can’t see anyone having trouble with these if they take a little care.

More than the sculpts is the rules that come with the models. Not only do you get the stat cards for the characters (every model in Bushido comes with a stat/record card tat details their abilities and allows you to track their health) but you get items, events, and a theme card too (items and events are largely self-explanatory I think but for clarity a theme card is a card that gives certain bonuses in return for building your list a certain way. In this case the requirement is that all models have the option for a speed boost on their stat card, as all the models in this box do). These are game elements that were previously only available as a separate purchase so that even with a starter you could not access the game at its entirety. Now even that has been remedied as you have cards for all aspects of the game right out of the starter box. The only thing you need that the box doesn’t supply is the rules, (not physical anyway, it has the address for the full free rules pdf: https://gctstudios.com/rules) something to play on, and an opponent. You don’t even need more models for a ‘proper’ sized game. As stated, Bushido is very compact and at least in the case of The Descension (which are rather elite) the starter has enough for a ‘full’ game, though Bushido also plays well with slightly bigger or slightly smaller warbands, it has quite good scalability.

So yes, this is a great starter set that a lot of companies, bigger ones included, could learn a lot from. Virtually everything about this has been incredibly well thought out all the way down to the sculpts and casts. I’m very impressed.

Martian Construction Crew

Working on stuff without guns has been a really nice change and will be a really good oppurtunity to work on some heavy weathering and civilian schemes that aren't concerned with stuff like visibility.
I have the vehicles at the base coated stage. I went for someting non-uniform to give me some variety to work with but leant more on hi-vis yellow. My favourite thing so far has been the civilian powered work suits:

Aaaand the work crew. They have had a matte coat since these pictures and just just need their bases finishing off.

Airmobile Mercs!

I realised I had a post referencing these before I actually made a post about them so here they are. I wanted to do an entirely airmobile army and  really liked the look of the GZG 'Bone Dome' helmeted mercenaries. I need to figure out the flight bases, I have a few ideas but just have to figure out which will be best and then actually get the things I need but that has slowed down the project enough its been pushed behind some others. Colour scheme wise The vehicles are going to be UN white as I will be doing a lot of green and bronw camo in other projects and white will be a lot of fun to weather.

I did a little mod on this one to give it a chin mounted weapon and a sensor orb as this will serve as the platoon's scout car.
I'm thinking of doing something like a UCP cao on the troops.

Posts of the Apocalyptic

This is mostly just a post to get some pictures of my painted models up. For the most part these have been painted using methods and paints described in previous posts. So Zona Alfa has come out and there is a bit of a buzz for putting together Stalker teams. I already had a bunch of stuff I was putting together for Nordic Weasel's under development 5 Klicks From the Zone rules (available in a playable but incomplete state for a reduced price compared to the final release) that I was putting a Roadside Picnic slant on so making them fit into ZA will be no problem.

That's everything complete to date, I also have some more stuff awaiting prime coats and preshading so I can get on with them. Amongst the waiting list is 80s Soviet and Bundeswehr troops in NBC kit from Eureka Miniatures as well as more Lead Adventure models, this time the more military themed ones. the LA stuff is pretty chunky but juuust on the acceptable side next to the more slight Eureka 28s I think. Two comparison pictures are shown to the right and below at any rate.                                                                                                           Mini Eureka Stalker in the middle!

The Germans I intend to field as mercenaries contracted to support a scientific expedition. I have yet to decide on a model to represent the scientist.

Bad Guys for my 'Free Mars' Setting!

I’ve been going backwards and forwards over what models to use as the ‘OPFOR’ for my Martian rebels and have settled and then reconsidered about 4 or 5 times so far but now I have settled for definite on the GZG NSL range. The NSL Jaeger light infantry caught my eye due to being a little bit different looking when compared to a lot of the other ranges with their slightly anachronistic uniform. The nature of the uniform made me think they would make good militarised police or security, the sort you might see a lot patrolling about protecting a megacorporation’s interests in cyberpunk media or of some totalitarian sci-fi state. Even better is that the same line has very hefty looking hard armoured ‘Panzergrenadiers’ that use the same weapons as the light infantry which means I can field regular civilian facing patrols and security/enforcement staff and then the shock troops for when the corporation pins down a rebel base.

To start off I have put together what I am calling a Punitive Action Team (euphemistic name for better optics incoming) Which is the basic organisational unit for dropping in on a settlement or neighbourhood, grabbing ‘suspets’ and kicking over people’s stuff looking for ‘evidence’. These troops might not have heaps of training, but they are motivated, and have good gear, though they typically lack heavy vehicle support they rarely need it. And if they do encounter something they can’t handle, they have a powerful coms set to call in backup, though distance and logistics might mean it can take a while to show. Some PATs receive light to significant drone support but often out on the frontiers (or if a particular captain is in the bad books) they have to do without.

So, a PAT is made up around a very simple configuration:

2 Trucks containing one squad each with each squad then divided into two 6 person teams intended to act in mutual support. One truck contains the major command, control, and communication gear, the other contains cells for prisoners (not large, not comfortable) or alternately room for heavier support weapons and equipment.

2 Outrider vehicles with top mounted support weapon. Each of these also carries a 5 person fire team. If the PAT is assigned designated marksmen or specialist weapon teams they are often found in these fire teams.

That’s it! I’m still considering colour schemes but while I’m trying to figure out how to mount the flyers for my mercenary airmobile force these have shifted to my 15mm painting priority. Purple uniforms and red hats, white for officers, is something I am considering although a classic sinister black uniform is tempting.
